This week Carlos and I get down to business and give you guys five action steps you can take to find better clients and higher paying work. We had a tough time narrowing it down to just five so we tried to pick a couple of obvious ones and a couple that were a little less common. PS – A little warning before viewing this video: About halfway through you’ll hear my dog start barking her fool head off, then the doorbell ring. You’ll witness me in a panic as I frantically search for a pause button (there is none) then jump up and run out of the room trying to quiet my background noises. Holding true to our no-edit policy however the the Friday Hangout is posted regardless.
Would I like to go back and edit this video? Of course. Will I? Probably not, and there are a couple of reasons for that. First, editing takes time, time that I’d much rather spend working with my good pal Carlos working on our upcoming online course (more on this later). Second, even though I come off looking like a complete rank amateur the info is solid and the no-edit policy stands… warts and all. Finally, I thought I could use this as a learning experience for anyone else who uses Google Hangouts. That being said if you ever find yourself in a similar situation here are some steps you can take to keep things from turning into a complete and total train wreck:
- Do not panic. Panic will only draw unwanted attention.
- Do NOT attempt to find a pause button…there is none. Instead, look for the mute button. The mute button will turn off all the sound on your end but will allow the Hangout to continue. With no sound the automatic view will not switch to your camera (showing you getting up out of your seat desperately trying to quiet your dog, doorbell or any other distraction). If you want to be sure there is also an option for turning off your camera. Both of these solutions live at the top, middle part of your screen. The mic, looks like a mic and the camera looks like a camera. When you turn them off they will have a little slash through them. That means nobody can see or hear you. the camera and sound will automatically revert to anyone else who is talking.
- Now that your audio and or video is muted hop up out of your chair, quickly answer the door, pat your dog on the head and thank her for being the best guard dog ever. Once the situation is resolved quickly head back to your computer and quietly un-mute both your mic and your camera pretending like nothing happened. Make sure you wait until you are set up before un-muting though so the camera doesn’t unintentionally begin broadcasting before you are ready.
- Have an AWESOME co-host like Carlos who will recognize the situation, jump in and take over like a total pro.
- Next time before beginning a Hangout let your loved ones know you are recording and post a little sign outside your office and on your front door asking visitors not to use the doorbell and letting them know you’re on air.
